What to Expect During Your First Week with Braces

A close-up shot of a woman's teeth after getting braces in Denver, CO Getting braces is an exciting step toward a straighter, healthier smile. At the same time, though, you might feel unsure about how they will affect your daily routine.

At Advanced Orthodontic Care, Dr. Rudman and Dr. Birg, who have decades of combined orthodontic experience, understand the challenges of adjusting to braces. They also know how to help patients manage the transition and make it as smooth as possible.

How Braces Feel in the First Few Days

When your braces are first placed, you may experience mild discomfort or pressure as your teeth begin to shift. Some patients also notice slight irritation on the inside of their lips and cheeks as they get used to the brackets and wires. These symptoms are completely normal and generally improve within a few days.

Tips for Managing Discomfort

It takes time for your mouth to adjust. Fortunately, there are simple ways to ease the transition:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers to manage soreness.
  • Apply orthodontic wax to brackets that rub against your cheeks or lips.
  • Choose soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, or smoothies to avoid extra pressure on your teeth.
  • Rinse with warm salt water to reduce gum tenderness.

Eating with Braces: What to Avoid

Braces require some dietary changes to prevent harm to brackets and wires. During your first week (and throughout treatment), avoid:

  • Hard foods like nuts, popcorn, and raw vegetables.
  • Sticky foods, including caramel, chewing gum, and taffy.
  • Crunchy foods like chips and hard candies.

Resist the urge to chew on ice, pens, or other hard objects as well. This can damage your braces.

Oral Hygiene with Braces

Brushing and flossing become even more important with braces. Plaque can build up around brackets, increasing the risk of cavities and gum irritation.

Clean around your braces using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Floss threaders or interdental brushes make reaching between teeth and under the wires easier.
