Orthodontics is the field of dentistry dedicated to straightening crooked teeth and repairing an improperly aligned bite. It is one of the most rapidly evolving fields in dentistry, and advances in orthodontic technology and treatment have enabled adults as well as children to enjoy the benefits of straighter teeth.
Ideal candidates for orthodontics:
- Have the majority of their permanent teeth
- Wish to improve the appearance and/or comfort of their teeth
- Have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure
The length of your orthodontic treatment will vary based on the severity of your malocclusion (misalignment). At your initial consultation, Denver orthodontist Dr. Robert Rudman will evaluate your teeth and recommend the appropriate treatment to correct your condition.
Common orthodontic treatments include:
Braces will align your teeth by applying constant pressure in the direction your teeth need to move. Dr. Rudman will adjust this pressure periodically during your treatment to facilitate the desired shift. While metal braces were once the standard method of treatment, advances in orthodontic technology have made clear braces an equally effective method to straighten your teeth with the added advantage of being less of an eyesore.
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that uses a series of customized, clear plastic aligners to straighten your teeth. Each aligner is worn for approximately two weeks, at which time it will be exchanged for a new aligner which will continue the treatment. They can be removed for eating, brushing your teeth, and special occasions, but should be worn at all other times to ensure proper results. Since they are not visible to others, Invisalign has become a very popular orthodontic treatment for adults.
Invisalign Teen is similar to the adult Invisalign treatment, but it is catered specifically to teenagers. It uses the same methods to straighten teeth, but it includes additional features such as a Blue Dot Wear Indicator which fades in color when it is time to switch aligners.
